eric maltz is a producer from new york city and now resides in berlin, germany. he is a former employee of halcyon records from its og glory days in it s first location in red hook/carrol gardens areas of brooklyn. -eric provided a sofa to me often through-ought my 20 s and vice-versa, we both cared about music above all else- we lived and breathed music- and we helped each other survive when we were penniless - if one was up, so was the other... eric and i were roommates, friends, we looked out for each other in a rough city with tough rules. every time one of us got a job at a restaurant or record shop, within weeks we would have the other working there too. we did that for a decade. we slang records for years at halcyon- a shop on smith street which had a portrait of stevie wonder painted on the front facade- and we threw parties all around brooklyn back then too.. every shitty bar that would have us lol. we were a dope team. he s the only person who has ever touched the third rail on a subway and survived too! true story. so you know i couldn t wait to release his debut lp. proud of this guy- - levon vincent

munichs martin matiske started his recording career at fifteen with his stunning ep stars & galaxy for dj hells gigollo records back in 2002. here he dons 4 fresh tracks for the vivod label with his trademark electro sound, somewhere between dopplereffekt, classical & wave. kicking off the ep is die nibelungen, a sort of speak & spell classical piece with an electro backing track. a2 - bayerischer wald is a chord heavy majestic bomb in a 5/4 time signature, maybe a stretch too far for the linear techno dj but thats what makes this ep so interesting. b2 - virtuosic mechanic harks back to his previous work on gigollo records, a more club orientated track which should do some effective damage on the floor. rounding things off is kammermusik, a subtle electro ballad. if you like your electro with a heavy classical influence then this is your ep.

stephen laubner never fails to deliver the goods, whether on his own label something or elsewhere. having recently popped up on the untold stories, this time around hes dropping his uniquely crusty compositions on synthetic gold. after a quietly disconcerting ambient opening, the leftfield grind of the taphead pushes an uncompromising agenda of ragged bass and an unrelenting groove. october sunrise by way of contrast is a more intimate, sweet natured affair. syntax error too taps into the softer side of laubner s craft in a most mesmerizing of ways, but for the die hard fans fear not, there s also plenty of locked groove loops included to keep you tripping into infinity.

the sweet and soulful harmonies of the whatnauts spanned a 15-year career in which they recorded three albums and numerous singles, ranging from timeless ballads to temptations-esque politically-charged funk to dancefloor boogie. the music of the baltimorebased group, which featured the angelic falsetto lead of billy herndon, gained relevance for a younger generation via samples taken by the likes of de la soul, a tribe called quest and kanye west. this 2-lp set is a career compendium of their best slow jams, funk grooves and 12-inch club tracks, including multiple unreleased and rare sides.

kiu d lands back at the masterworks hq for his latest release -the journey - 12 inch sampler-. having steadily climbed the ranks of modern disco producers with consistent releases for the likes of hot digits & special editionà he returns to masterworks with his 4th outing on the label. rounding up a fierce collection of heavy beats, sampled grooves and lush melodies, kiu d remains in fine form and is apparently immune to resting on his laurels.

ortella, -the king of clubbing in lyon- is back with a new record label, merging all the projects they starts with his partner kaïs in one unique home, mad recordings. the first release on the platform is by the french man himself, served as an engaged manifesto, music is my shelter is a statement for all the house producers around the world, talking about the years of struggle, the faith in the music as an art and the joy to see one day dreams comes true. no surprise about the style, it s a pure garage house ep released in the old style way, with 3 versions of the same hit! original de luxe is a classic extended cut, club friendly, rich of flavor with flying and crying rhodes keyboards by the talented françois a. an anthem that transports you to a time where house music was a religion and clubs were churches. intro de luxe version is a shortened version, perfect to starts a night with the right mood without announcing too much, just enough to warm-up the dance floor with some emotion. dub de luxe is for more modern purists, putting aside for a short period the piano rolls and focusing on what ortella do the best, percussive drums with no compromise, made for releasing the energy level straight from dancers to the floor.

nyc’s disco powerhouse west end records should need no intro. the home of too-numerous-to-list club classics for over 30+ years is still impacting today on what we know to be club culture. the label started by one mel cheren (rip) with assistance from larry levan and more way back in 1976 is still held in such high regard today with it’s catalogue constantly being played, rediscovered, reinterpreted and loved by waves and waves of new fans and admirers.
the west end story vol. 4 is an essential overview of this most iconic of labels and some of it’s more under the radar output, following on it’s from it’s predecessor the quality bar is obviously set extremely high, one only has to look over the tracklist to see the names and titles that are included! rare and overlooked cuts from sparque, debbie trusty, barbara mason, ednah holt and more make up 4 joyous sides of essential forward looking post disco classics - we’re talking late 70’s, early 80’s, synths, mega overdubs, left-field arrangements and anything and everything in-between.
a truly golden era of dance music history, names like tom moulton, tom savarese and more make up some of the talent featured on this flawless selection of goodies. oh, and for the record (no pun intended) these are all the extended mixes, 12” versions and special cuts, all killer - no filler! all tracks featured re-mastered, re-pressed and re-released with the permission of and in conjunction with west end records, new york city / bmg.

during the mid-80s and early 90s movin’ records defined the new jersey sound. a skate-shop-turned-record-store run by the so-called “fairy godmother of house” abigail adams, movin’s first output was ‘i’ve got the music’ by boyd jarvis in 1987, followed by music from game changers blaze, kerri chandler, tony humphries and smack, straight up “jersey jams” that producers are still attempting to replicate to this day. still the movin’ records catalogue throws up gems that sound super fresh along with plenty of lightbulb moments of musical discovery.
for the most part movin’ records focused on soulful vocal tracks but they peppered a few deeper tracks into the catalogue too. this is one of those releases and one of the rarer titles to find from the label. produced by steve kelly and steve ‘lucky’ benson as 3 a.m., this was the only single under that group name, although they were involved in other productions from new jersey. deep chords, a heavy kick and a low-end bass form the backing for the repeated vocal line “i love this place”. the ‘place of worship’ mix brings an uplifting piano line to the forefront, whilst an organ line jams out through the track with a jazzy walking bassline holding the groove together.

first time band anthology - includes 9 unreleased tracks! this fall, the independent literary press all night menu will publish sam sweets hadley lee lightcap, a nonfiction novel that traces the backstories of the three members in acetone, a band that played in los angeles for nine years. though few heard them, their recordings are time capsules of who they were, how they lived, and where they came from. light in the attic has partnered with all night menu to present acetone 1992-2001, the first anthology of the trios music. the book and the album will be released at the same time.

the new album of dj hell zukunftsmusik keeps bringing us good news. the latest single to drop from the album, car car car, arrives with remixes from some of the scenes most enigmatic producers. roman fluegel presents his own eclectic and diverse interpretation in a playful and artistic vibe, while phil kierans autobahn remix is a straight, deep and dark version of the original track, which is featured on the vinyl too.

being selfish, is one of the good things about running your own label. if you please, you can just try and re-release that certain record that you always wanted for yourself, but never could get your hand on it. now, you can just edit it the way you always wanted it to be (oh, those fade-outsà) and press it up. this is one of these occasions. when kalk (the collaborative project of philippe heinen and joffrey becker) was released on julien briffaz label brif in 1999, i just had started to dj out at a club in darmstadt (the late cafÚ kesselhaus) and the restrained, yet punchy house tracks symbolized what i liked about deep house back then: a mellow alternative to the bpm hunt and rigid attitude in mainstream techno, while not losing itself in chin-stroking wisdom or pesky noodling. it seemed that there werent too many around with the same desire. otherwise akasha wouldnt have remained a diamond in disguise and not what morgan geist so aptly named an unclassic. by his definition, that is: an old by and large forgotten record that would have deserved to be hit. if you take discogs as an indicator, more and more people start to think so though. here is your second chance to obtain a copy of the spirit of kalk. mildly edited and restored in the best human-possible way. mind you, its old house music from days of yore. dj gj

this limon is sweet, not sour! austin boogie crew records presensts its newest 45 release: the solo vinyl debut of san franciscos own trailer limon (dan meisenheimer). as one half of the pendletons (along with e da boss), limon has been leaving his imprint on the modern funk scene since 2010 with classic singles like waiting on you, let me turn you on, and most recently on the gotta get out ep. this solo 45 features two choice cuts with appearances from west coast heavy hitters e. live and b. bravo. dancing with somebody is a sleek and sexy mid-tempo delight where limon croons about dancing with a stranger while another lover is on his mind. steppers will adore the bumping drums, soaring keys, and resonant bass that peeks its head out at the perfect times. too good.

that crystalline moment we all know too well. what was saturday night has become sunday morning. pleading with sleep to come while piecing together the last few hours of the party you’ve just left. few would claim to be at their most productive at this ungodly hour. not hekkla, this is when he gets down to work.
the nachtbraker ep is the product of several of these post club jam sessions. or in the words of the artist “the same places revisited again and again in the midst of night.” translated from the dutch word “night owl”, hekkla’s latest extended play delivers on it’s promise, serving 4 cuts of floor filling goodness ready for breakfast.

after a short hiatus to axe on wax and his return to tieffrequent records monosoul is coming back to s4aw, too... monosoul s signature sound is still there and yet has changed a bit. more bouncing basslines, more deepness and more synth textures... on remix credits we ve got atlanta s very own byron the aquarius. 2016 was an exceptionally good year for him in the biz with releases on wild oats, sound signature, etc. in 2017 he will totally go big with his unique, deep - no frills jazzy impro style. so we re more than happy with his own chord jams making up a top notch remix. what s left to be said well like michael brody put it: nothing is more important than friendship. not money, not fame, not death. crew love is true love!

favorite recordings presents this new official album reissue of sunshine by junior byron: a real modern-soul/disco masterpiece, originally released in 1981 by canadian label formula records, and very hard to find today.
based in canada, junior byron had quite a short career as a singer and recorded only a few singles and this stunning album between 1981 and 1985. produced by andré perry and joe la greca, two famous names in the canadian music scene, sunshine is not just a one track album, but a complete whole piece of music, including some brilliants highlights such as “inch by inch”, “galaxy” or “sunshine”, which are today must-haves in many dj’s lists.
as another longtime favorite collectable piece for charles maurice, it’s a real honor and proud for favorite recordings, to finally officially reissue it for the first time on vinyl. in order to insure the best sound quality, the original tracklist has been dispatched on a double vinyl version, which should please all djs and music collectors.

monumental house anthem alert! another classic jammer from 1992 lifted straight from the strictly vaults. this one s huge. phuture aka acid house pioneers spanky and dj pierre (with a little help from roy davis jr) turn in a driving, acidic monster in true wild pitch style. probably the only record that begins with a sinister voice saying this is cocaine speaking before diving head-long into one of the best anti-drug house records ever. absolutely brilliant. bubbling 303 basslines and cavernous handclaps combine with a funked out, dubbed out synth line that just doesn t stop. phuture will survive, and they weren t lying when they said that as this record (among too many others they had a hand in) still rock today. yep, still fresh. tried and tested, often imitated, never bettered. phuture are the originals. open up your eyes (and ears). this one s a tasty 2017 reissue and remaster, featuring all 4 mixes as per the original release way back when. essential stuff here. you simply need this one.

...and in the end, not a great deal is known about the spanish duo futuro. the saga begins with the discovery of a cache of test pressings deep within the shelves of a very dusty record shop near the plaza del toros de valencia. as is the case with these things there was no promo sheet or any other information outside of three clues etched into the run-out groove: futuro, jollyman, mcmlxxxvii. through deduction and reasoning it was soon realised that jollyman was a short lived italian record label that closed it s doors in 1987. there were rumours for a while that jollyman was a mafia wedding gift to a music enthused female family member, but as the journey continued it became slightly more likely that this was a tax write-off for it s owners, as the label itself was never very successful, and was more likely an afterthought rather than a full on passion project. that is not to say that there were not gems hidden within it s small catalogue, most notably from noted library musician, composer and arranger alessandro signoretti, without whose help this release would not be presently in front of you. alessandro s assistance led us to the infamous hafenklang studio in hamburg, germany. the very same studio used by boytronic to record their classic lp the continental (some of the same dx presets can easily be heard on both albums) and despite the insane amounts of musicians that have passed through those doors the owner clearly remembered the duo and finally the mysterious futuro had names: javier c rayón and raúl láynez.

too late for the italo boom, and too early for the sonido de valencia craze, the recordings of futuro have sat on master tapes since 1987 finally awaiting their much deserved audience. bordello a parigi are more than proud to present this lost late slow-mo synthesizer italo masterpiece onto the world.

live at the apollo, volume ii by james brown and the famous flames was originally released in august 1968. a follow-up to the original 1963 album live at the apollo it too was recorded in new york at the apollo theater in harlem. this deluxe edition features a more expanded live set including 19 minute version of “it’s a man’s man’s man’s world”.

finally four guys from the deepest south of germany decided to share some of their shit on vinyl and hodenhouse is the result of this idea. as the name of the label suggests those four guys never takin things and themselves too seriously. it s a pure love thang. and love is limited. like our first ep, hodenhouse001, limited to 250 pcs, vinyl only. perhaps in the future there will be some more releases, perhaps not. we don t know jet and to us it isn t as much important at the moment. the ep includes tracks from mad lee, kaam and nly1p. be prepared. it will be released later this year. yo.

the third instalment of our amenizer series continues in the same vein as the previous two, with a generous serving of every junglist’s favourite breakbeat, on a no frills white label vinyl, with an undercover artist providing the ammunition. jedi hi-fi is an alias of one of our core foundation x family members, and if you listen keenly it shouldn’t be too hard to work out who is responsible for these four cuts, with a trademark jungle sound which is heavily influenced by 80 s jamaican dancehall sound systems and 70 s dub production..... reggae reggae sauce – as the vocal says “serious damage” and that’s what this track will do no questions asked..... sound check 1 – dubwise from start to finish, the signature sounds ofjedi hi-fi are evident throughout from the top to the very last drop. sound check 2 – jazzy intro vibes soon give way to a head nod amen patternand creation discoteq vocal samples bounce in between the beats and bass. problems – the final track of the ep sees some expert echo chamber work.

mister mellow moves further away from the synthesizer-heavy sounds of the recent washed out releases and more band-driven sound of his work on iconic labels sub pop in america, and domino in europe. on mister mellow, greene draws from the experimental collage techniques of musique concrète and plunderphonics artists such as the residents. combining styles as diverse as free jazz, house, hip-hop and psych together with interlude-esque voiceover samples, often pulled from anonymous youtube vlogs, he creates a busy, chaotic, and caricaturish mix that mirrors the claustrophobic, hyper-stimulated psyche so familiar to young adults. as he continues to carve out his innovative sonic identity, influenced by the world around him but unafraid to buck trends, it’s fitting that greene has partnered with legendary hip hop label stones throw records, long a home for beat-loving musical rebels. his approach to releasing music is every bit as individual, too: in an environment where compiling singles into an album format or working with a single video director are the norm, greene has chosen to commission eleven different artists to bring the visual aspect of his fully-realised album project to life. on mister mellow, washed out steers clear of emotion to empathise with the minutiae of the world around him. ive been much less interested in sentimentality and emotion for the past couple of years, says greene, in some ways, i think its a reaction against getting older and having more responsibilities. maybe i’m just nostalgic for a time in my life where i could just relax and block out the world for a moment. though mister mellow is an intensely personal album, its ideas and observations speak to the lived experience of so many young adults, an experience that we come to see as both funny and sad.

another very fine release in asthmatic kitty s library catalog music series, this album comes from william ryan fritch, a prolific film composer, sound recordist and multi-instrumentalist from oakland, ca. fittingly, music for honey and bile takes on the character of a cinematic score, collecting a number of varied instrumentals that show an incredible range to fritch s diverse talents. in addition to the composition and production, fritch performs virtually everything on the album, playing piano, guitars, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, marimba, vibraphone and dulcimer to name but a relative few. this is seriously impressive stuff, and chamber pieces such as too anxious to dream , shadows like despondent ghosts and tongues that chatter like pigeons sound like the work of a large ensemble rather than just one man. the variety exhibited on the album is breathtaking too, switching between large-scale productions complete with multilayered strings and percussion to more intimate pieces like eggshells and the manipulated piano drone minimalism of chewed their nails to caustic red pads .

edanticonf s music feels perfectly crafted for the brooding atmospheric venues he so often performs in. both the aforementioned adjectives can be attributed to his style of techno too, one that places the focus less on the technical side and more onthe human one, aiming to reflect his emotions and state of being through the hazy soundscapes that draw influence from the natural scenery around him.

before there was a man in black, there were the sun records years, when cash began defining his peculiar and witty version of country music. born in arkansas in 1932, cash began recording as a top artist for sun records, for which he released his first full-length lp. this double lp set documents all the hits from 1955 to 1958, before cash signed to columbia records. these 35 “first steps” helped build the legend and are considered the milestones of an incredible career that ended with those passionate and soulful albums on the “american recordings” series released between 1994 and 2003, the year jr cash died on sept 12.
